How does a nation rise above crises to secure its future?
On 29 February 2024, Zambia faced a pivotal moment as the President, His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, declared the drought a national disaster. The energy and food crises induced by the drought have been devastating. With these challenges battering Zambia’s economy, the question is clear: What can we do to bring relief and chart a sustainable path forward?
In my latest paper, “Navigating Zambia’s Economic Battlefield,” I delve into the economic challenges Zambia faces today. From the devastating effects of climate change to the critical roles of government, the private sector, and international partners, I pose questions that if answered, will help Zambia move forward.
In my earlier publications, I focused on the Government’s role in fostering a conducive environment. This time, I expand the discussion to include the Private Sector and other key players, urging all of us to reflect on these critical questions:
Key challenges for the Private Sector:
- How can we collaborate more effectively to mitigate the effects of economic crises?
- Are we united in our efforts, or are we operating in isolation?
- What unified priorities can we agree upon to benefit the broader economy?
“To unite and face the forces together is what we need. Anything else is like attempting to win a war against an external enemy whilst also fighting a civil war.”
This is a call to action for all stakeholders—government, private sector, and citizens alike. Together, we must tackle these challenges and create solutions that secure a brighter future for Zambia.
